Happy 60th Birthday Dearest Mama!
Scooter Board! Updated…
I received a phone call from the school this morning. Usually this means that one of the boys (Will) is sick and wants to come home. This morning the call was about an accident. Luke had been sent to the office from gym class. He was currently sitting with his hand wrapped in an ice pack. Dusty, the wife of Luke’s teacher and a secretary at the school, thought it would be a good idea if I came and looked at Luke, brought him some Tylenol and that I would probably like to take him home afterward. Never a good thing when another mother thinks something is bad enough to warrant a “take home.”
After trekking another time down to the school, I had already walked the boys to school two hours earlier, I walked into the office and was directed to where Luke was calmly sitting eating a snack. As soon as he saw Em and I, he started to tear up.
“Mom, I got a big blood blister.”
Looking at his little hand, I saw that he had two tiny band aid strips crossing his left pointer fingertip.
“How bad can it be with such tiny strips covering it? I thought.”
I parked the stroller next to Luke’s chair and sat next to him to take a look. As I started to peel the tiny strip away from Luke’s fingertip, I was amazed at the sight before me. I had never seen anything like it before in my life.
Luke bravely took his grape medicine with a drink from the water fountain and we told William, who was in his literacy class, that he needed to boldly walk home by himself (Will’s words.) As we turned to leave, Luke’s gym teacher approached us and asked if he was feeling better. He said no. She apologized for the accident and we talked about how neither of us had seen anything like it and then she added that she hoped Luke didn’t use his fingernail. Oh yeah, that is a cheery thought.
Then we strollered home. Luke has spent the rest of the day with his finger covered with a cold pack and some pain from the swelling. Luke’s biggest regret of the day was that he missed his Thanksgiving feast in his classroom because of his injury. He was going to have pumpkin pie with whipped cream, corn and apple cider. He is most sad.
Poor Lukey got his finger ran over by the wheel of a scooter board ridden by a boy in another class. You remember the scooter boards from elementary school, right? Square board with four caster wheels that you sit on and ride with wild abandon zipping left, right or in circles.
Don’t look at the pictures if you have blood issues. You have been warned.

Update:
Luke went to the doctor this morning and had his blood blister lanced to relieve the pressure. Doctor Di washed it with betadine and then lanced Luke’s finger twice as there was a lot of liquid blood in there. Luke cried and screamed. Luke never cries about shots or pokes at the doctor’s, so it was really surprising for all involved. Just goes to show that he is a brave boy because his finger must have been really painful and he has been a real trooper. Luke must wear his bandage for five days and take some antibiotics to keep his finger from getting infected.
